Juniors and Seniors at Standley Lake take their rivalry out on the field during this year's Powder Puff.

Juniors and Seniors have always had an unspoken rivalry throughout the years at Standley Lake High School, constantly arguing over is more dominant. As part of homecoming tradition, Standley Lake hosts the Powder Puff Football game between the Junior and Senior girls. The game is a perfect time to prove who is the real top-dog of the school and also reveals the bad blood between the two classes.

On September 21st, 2021 Standley Lake’s female students got the opportunity to represent their class and settle this ongoing feud. Many Seniors happen to believe that they are better than the Juniors, because with age comes certain privileges.

According to Jasmine Blustein ‘22, “Juniors are tiny. They are basically freshmen.”

The yearly Powder Puff game fosters a schoolwide competition prompting cockiness from both classes. As the weeks leading up to the game play out, playful tensions between the upperclassmen ripple through the school, compounding into a brawl settled on the turf.

Malia Mischke ‘22 expanded on the senior class perspective, “The [Juniors] kind of just think that because they are now upperclassmen that they are better than everyone but they are not. Seniors are better because we actually put effort into what we do.”

Junior competitors had a lot to say about the seniors as well, refusing to back down from their challengers.

When speaking to The Lake, Adisyn Sellers ‘23 and Emma Beard ‘23 didn't hold back when calling out the senior’s arrogance.

“The seniors think they are better than everyone else, they are stuck up. The senior’s egos are way too high. They need to bring it down a notch. We [the Juniors] are more put together.”

Chiara Miller ‘22 contests the Junior’s claims of being more put together, stating “[...]we have more determination. We don’t need organization, we don’t need anything else. We just have determination and we are going to beat them.”

During the final seconds of the Powder Puff game, the Senior girls proved the Juniors wrong with a score of 30-28. Although it was a close game, the Senior class remains triumphant. However, the conflict between the two classes will continue as part of a strange tradition at Standley Lake High School.
